Hello from DC

Well, all the news around here has been about the recent shooting at Virginia Tech. It’s really quite sad and must really touch home for a lot of college students out there. Even though it’s been a few years since I’ve been in school, I still feel as if this tragedy happened to fellow members of my demographic, especially since I was an engineering student in college. I hope the school and community can heal together and overcome the aftermath of these shocking events.

On the flip side of the coin, I’m feeling a tinge of fear about how Asian people, including myself, will be treated after the shooting. It doesn’t help that I’m in DC this week, about two hours away from Virginia Tech. Although it won’t be hardly as bad as it is for Arab people in the US, you never know what ignorent people will do.

Anyway, so the reason I’m in DC is I’m teaching a week long class at a major ISP. I generally hate having to travel for work unless it’s to someplace interesting like Praha, Milano, or Maui, and DC is definitely not on my list of interesting places to visit. One small consolation is the Internet speed here– 11.6 mbps is not bad.

Such a pain

I hate taxes. But now I hate TurboTax even more. They royally screwed up K-1 entries and thus all income from S corporations, and I need to file returns for two S corporations for two different states this year. From now on, I’m just going to file on my own now and will never buy TurboTax crap ever again. I’d write something more indignant if I wasn’t so tired from staying up all night trying to get this piece of **** to work. :(

Woman sues Microsoft for deceptive Vista marketing

*rolls eyes* Get the story here. This lady says she bought a computer with a “Vista capable” sticker on it, and is suing Microsoft because it can only run Vista Home Basic, not Vista Home Premium. She should go out and buy a Mercedes C230, then sue Mercedes because it only has 200 hp and not 600 hp like the Mercedes SLR McLarren. I hope someone slaps her.

Western Classical Music Influence in China

The New York Times has an interesting article on the increasing prevalence of Western classical music in China, including the reasons for its popularity and the challenges classical music students face growing up in China. It’s fascinating to me, having been both Chinese and a classical music student for as long as I can remember.
