Out 4-5 weeks (sprained right finger)

Posted Wednesday, May 3, 2006 at 15h24 in Personal, Sports

It’s like those injury reports I used to dread seeing on my fantasy NBA players roster. My right fourth finger knuckle was sticking out to the left more than it should, even after all the initial bruising from last week went away, so I got nervous and decided to see a doctor, who told me to get an X-ray to make sure there was no fracture. There was none, so the diagnosis is just a bad sprain that might take up to four to five weeks to heal. Now I have a basketball injury to tell stories about– not as cool as my dislocated shoulder from rollerblading during the summer of my junior year, but definitely less painful.

OUchie!

did the doc say you could still use it during that 4-5 weeks or will you have to go on the DL? I can’t imagine your employer would like that very much (or you for that matter). Do you have a clause in your eomployment contract barring you from playing basketball? I hope you don’t, I know some guys who actually do … :(
hope it heals quickly.

Thanks for the concern. :) The doc didn’t say anything about not using it. It only hurts slightly if I type fast. I’ve actually played tennis with it once, and it didn’t hurt that much. It only really hurts if I apply adequate pressure to it.

Should I keep icing it? All the bruising and most of the swelling has gone away, except for the knuckle sticking out to the side. I suppose that’s some sort of swelling, though honestly I thought it was bone before because it felt pretty hard.

No I don’t think iceing it any further will help now. most of the treatment for sprains is usually done nad is most effective in the first 24 hours (at least for the RICE). The last sprain I had was a bit more severe and debilitating than the one you have now, (I had a severe anterior sprain on my left ankle) at the time I had to daily exercises to restore a full range of motion to it in the infamous cold tubs. I don’t think you should that for a finger though

I imagine if your doctor wanted you to do exercises he/she would have said so.Personally I wouldn’t press your luck by playing things like tennis until it’s pretty much better. Sprains can be easily reaggravated if you’re not careful. I’d use it as sparingly as you can manage.

Ruach, heheh did you know I also once burned off half the skin on my left arm in a biking accident, and could actually see the white of my bone at my elbow through all the blood? :D

JZ, thanks for the tips! The weather is so nice right now that it’s very tempting to play tennis, but I guess I’ll have to fight that temptation. :)

It happened back when I was in elementary school. It’s one of the few childhood memories I remember vividly.

Good thing it’s not much more than a sprain. I remember the story about that junior year accident … what a wild ride.

Haha, actually it did affect dota in the beginning, but now I’ve learned to play through the pain. :)
