Core Duo in a microATX box

For those of us who’ve been on the edge of our seats to see an Intel Core Duo chip in an ATX box, here’s an article from ExtremeTech describing such a solution, with the Core Duo T2600 and the Asus N4L-VM, a purely microATX motherboard. After reading the review, it looks like this would be a great solution for a small, quiet, decently powerful box to put in your living room for casual gaming, video encoding, and multimedia playback.

What’s an ATX box?

ATX is a form factor for cases and motherboards. Almost all cases and motherboards sold today are ATX. Core Duo chips are made for laptops, so they require special motherboards to get them into an ATX box. In general, Intel’s mobile processors perform “better” and produce less heat than their desktop chips, so some people prefer to use Intel mobile CPUs in their desktops. The Core Dup chips are an excellent example.
